Cacapon Mountain Overlook at Cacapon State Park

Just a short drive up the rugged Cacapon Mountain guests can enjoy an outstanding view of the valley below beholding Cacapon State Park. The overlook is accessible by vehicle May through October. Adventurous hikers can access this view year round.

Prospect Peak Scenic Overlook: now known as the Panorama Overlook

This overlook is easily accessible by vehicle off the park on Route 9 where there is a roadside pull off. Once visited frequently by George Washington this headland overlooks the Potomac and Great Cacapon Valleys and three states; WV, PA, MD.


Walking Tour. Enjoy the fresh air and take a walking tour of the Berkeley Springs State Park that’s located in the square of downtown Berkeley Springs.

From Easter through Thanksgiving, mountain trail rides originate from Cacapon State Park. One of the most popular rides starts in the state park and crosses along the top of Cacapon Mountain for 10 miles to the historically and geologically prominent Cacapon Rocks. With its spectacular views of the Cacapon River Valley, the Rocks were a common destination for 18th and 19th century riders, George Washington wrote often of his daily rides there.

Visit the Panorama Overlook located west along Rt. 9 approximately 3 miles from Berkeley Springs. A pull-off provides a scenic view of three states and two rivers rated by National Geographic as one of the five best in the East. The scene also encapsulates America's transportation history showing the C&O Canal on the Maryland side of the river and the B&O Railroad on the West Virginia side.

Rodeo fans can enjoy sanctioned events at the outdoor Triple B Arena along historic Sir Johns Run. Held on Sunday afternoons, activities feature team sorting, barrel racing and team roping. Occasional special events include country music concerts and full-scale rodeos.

There are sand beaches and lake SWIMMING with lifeguards in season at Cacapon State Park. The public swimming pool in Berkeley Springs State Park is open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Coolfont has a year 'round indoor pool or please contact Berkeley Springs Cottage Rentals for a cottage that has either a community lake or outdoor pool access.

Just 20 minutes away from Berkeley Springs. "It's no walk in the park." 18 mile circuit. Discover some of the best views and scenery of the forest on the ORV (Off Road Vehicle) trail. Be sure to display a Department of Natural Resources Off-Road Vehicle permit. Permits may be purchased at the visitor center.

The Ridge Fish Hatchery breeds famous West Virginia trout used to stock local lakes. Sleepy Creek Lake has bass, sunfish, pike and crappie. You can watch the hatchling fish (also call fry) in the ponds of the hatchery, see the species of trout native to the area and feed them. Located right on Rt. 522 South, just north of the Virginia-West Virginia Line; from Berkeley springs go south on Rt. 522 pass Cacapon State Park, pass the Timber Ridge Motel, you will see Fish Hatchery Road on your left there is also a big blue house in the intersection of Fish Hatchery Road and 522, make a left onto Fish Hatchery Road and then an immediate left into the parking area of the hatchery.

The hatchery is open to the public year round until dusk each day.

Public tennis, basketball and volleyball courts are found at Cacapon State Park and Biser Street Park in town.



Paw Paw Town Park has a softball field and playground.

The Morgan County Recreation Area provides five ball fields for league play. Spectators are welcome.

Cross country skiing is a popular sport on the mountain trails of Cacapon State Park, and along the many back roads of the county. Bring your own equipment.

Also located in The Cove is a snow tubing run. It is quite reasonable and is only about an hour from Berkeley Springs in Gore, VA.

Hiking Map of Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area

Members of the Berkeley Springs Community are currently establishing an electronic copy of the trail maps for hiking areas in the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area to include the Tuscarora Trail. However, you can purchase a hard copy of the Tuscarora Trail for a fee of around $6 at Nature’s Niche in downtown Berkeley Springs or you can order a map of this area (please click on picture to the left). YOu may also check this

Preserve provides habitat that supports a wide variety of plant and animal species. The Eidolon Nature Preserve straddles the summit and both sides of Sideling Hill, west of Berkeley Springs, WV. Over the years volunteers have developed a series of trails throughout the property which are clearly marked.

Directions:
From Berkeley Springs - the intersection of Routes 522 and 9, take Route 9 west over Cacapon Mountain and through the village of Great Cacapon until you reach Detour Road (a total of 7.6 miles). Go right on Detour Road for 9/10s of a mile to Orleans Road. Go right on Orleans Road and follow it up Sideling Hill for 2.1 miles; the entrance to Eidolon will be on your right - a light green metal gate flanked by two low, square stone pillars. Those who visit are asked to park outside the gated entrance and proceed into the preserve on foot.
